Hiroyuki Imaishi (今石 洋之, Imaishi Hiroyuki, born October 4, 1971) is a Japanese anime director, animator and co-founder of Studio Trigger. His style is marked by fast and frantic animation combined with elaborate storyboarding and punchy direction. Prior to founding Trigger, he was an animator and director at Gainax. His most well-known works include Gurren Lagann (2007), Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (2010), Kill la Kill (2013), Promare (2019), and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022).
Early career
After drawing the manga for the doujinshi circle, Imaishi worked as a creator. He worked at Gainax in 1995 as an in-between animator for Neon Genesis Evangelion. Some of his early works include animation direction, storyboarding and key animation for Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances), FLCL, Diebuster, Oval X Over, and the ending animation of Paradise Kiss. He went on to direct Dead Leaves, a 2004 anime film produced by Production I.G. and the first episode of Re: Cutie Honey.
Director
His series director debut was Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007). The anime received an Excellence Prize at the 2007 Japan Media Arts Festival, and Imaishi himself received an individual award at the twelfth Animation Kobe Festival. In 2008, the anime received both "best television production" and "best character design" from the Tokyo International Anime Fair. Later he went on to work as director in the anime series, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. His main influence of being an animator and director are Yoshinori Kanada and his works, in which all his anime titles such as Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann Earlier this month, Japanese outlet The River hosted a conversation between Studio Trigger co-founder Hiroyuki Imaishi and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director, Wes Ball (also of the Maze Runner trilogy), designed to “transcend the boundaries between Hollywood movies and Japanese anime.” The pair discussed their careers, Ball’s love for Gurren Lagann, and differences between working environments, and even joked over a potential Planet of the Apes anime series. When Ball asked what Imaishi was working on currently, he revealed that he was working on a comedy series, stating: Also read: Ball also revealed that he didn’t like the original Maze Runner novels and hoped to turn Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes into a trilogy, sparking an interesting conversation between the pair over their attitudes towards sequels and continuations. Similar to what Imaishi said in his interview with Anime Corner, he told Ball he doesn’t “want to hold back” in his works, “so I’ll draw everything. I don’t know if I’ll get an offer next time, so I’ll just do it all (laughs),” he added. Despite Imaishi’s position on sequels, a continuation of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is in development. Nevertheless, it’s technically not a Studio Trigger sequel since Imaishi directed it at Gainax. The story centers on the “Anarchy Sisters” Panty and Stocking, who were kicked out of heaven for their many sins. Banished to Daten City, they’re supported by their questionable preacher boss Garterbelt in exorcising evil in exchange for a ticket back to Heaven. Given Imaishi’s record, his upcoming comedy project will likely take place at Studio Trigger. Still, we may se See full article at ScreenRantStudio TRIGGER's Imaishi Hints at Upcoming Comedy Project
“I’m currently working on a comedy for the first time in a while. I can’t officially reveal the title yet, but it should be available overseas.“
