Most Marvel Comics fans have a rough idea of the universe's power structure, with the One Above All at the top, Howard the Duck at the bottom, and various Avengers and X-Men scattered between them. However, the Marvel Universe is always in flux, and many beings who are technically the wielders of A-list power are currently dead, depowered, or missing in action. The Immortal Fist of Khonshu

After a valiant self-sacrifice to save his allies, Moon Knight’s soul was locked away in an afterlife while Khonshu was sealed in an Asgardian vault, unable to resurrect his champion. First Appearance: 'Fantastic Four #562' (2009)

Having dedicated a billion years of his existence to the study of Time and Space, the Marquis is an all-powerful being with the ability to manipulate reality and destroy entire planets and civilizations.

In ‘Fantastic Four #562’, the Marquis of Death arrives on Earth and begins mentoring a young Victor von Doom, but when he returns to Earth 20 years later, he expresses disappointment at Doom’s failings against the Fantastic Four. Manipulative and domineering, he becomes Doom’s sworn enemy after showing him a perfect life, then stripping it away from him. The Marquis of Death was ultimately killed by a vengeful Dr. Doom in ‘Fantastic Four #569’.

The Strongest Comic Book Characters, Ranked

There is an ongoing debate among comic fans regarding the terminology used to discuss certain heroes and villains. These debates often focus on popular comic book characters' different strengths and power levels. Of course, the strongest comic book characters aren’t always considered the most powerful comic book characters.

While some fans consider strong an all-encompassing term, others prefer to use strength more literally regarding their physical prowess. However, most fans can agree that Superman and The Hulk are some of the most powerful comic book characters in the DC and Marvel universes. This is due to both their incredible physical strength and their overwhelming abilities.

First Appearance: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-Series #7 by Barbara Randall Kesel, Marley Zarcone, Heather Breckel and Shawn Lee

While each member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles features enhanced strength due to their mutation, they aren't the strongest in their respective universe. In the IDW comic continuity, that honor goes to Slash, a mutated snapping turtle who wore a black bandanna and wielded enough strength to throw vehicles around easily.

Slash's strength was so impressive that Agent Bishop and the Earth Protection Force captured and completely enslaved him. Bishop used his hulking new weapon to face power

The Marvel and DC cinematic universes serve as a great way to introduce casual viewers to some of the more obscure characters from comic book history. They also allow devoted comic book readers to see some of their favorite heroes and villains up on the silver screen. However, there are some comic book characters who are far too powerful to appear in the MCU or DCEU due to the massive imbalance that their inclusion would inevitably create.

The strongest comic book characters boast abilities that would put the likes of Superman and Captain America to shame were they ever to come face to face. Likewise, the celestial beings who watch over their respective universes possess powers that could vaporize villains mere moments into a movie, making it impossible to integrate them without producing plot holes. As such, many of the most powerful comic book characters will likely remain in print for all eternity, which, in many ways, is a real shame.

Updated October 23, 2022, by Tom Bowen: Trying to determine who is the strongest comic book character is far from easy. After all, there are countless characters to choose from, many of whom have incredibly similar powers. Even when trying to compare characters who do have their own unique abilities, how exactly does one way up the usefulness of one otherworldly power over another when both have the potential to destroy entire worlds in an instant? The most powerful comic book characters invariably find a way to set themselves apart though, either through the way that they use their powers or the sheer number of god-like abilities that they have at their disposal.
