Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande was born on August 10, 1860, into a Chitpavan Brahmin family in Walkeshwar, Bombay. His father was a businessman and had lots of interest in music, so he made his children Bhatkhand and his siblings receive an education in classical music. Since childhood, Bhatkhande developed a very much interest in music.

He also won many prizes for singing in school. After completing his BA.LLB degree; in 1884, his music interest took him to Pt. Ravji Bua Belbagkar, under whom he received Dhrupad-Dhamaar training. He learned Sitar from Vallabhdas Damulji and devoted his entire life to music.

Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande travelled throughout India to learn music. During his travels in 1905, he collected over 300 records of songs from Mohammad Ali of the Manrang Dynasty.

The Government of India issued this commemorative stamp in 1961, to commemorate him and his work.
