Patrick J. Lynch

Pat is an author, illustrator, photographer, and artist. Pat retired from Yale University after 45 years as an interactive media designer, medical illustrator, biomedical and scientific photographer, video producer, and for the past 30 years a director of media and communications departments, and a designer of interactive multimedia teaching, training, and informational software and web sites.

Pat has won over 35 national and international awards for his medical illustration, publications, and software design, including a National Outdoor Book Award, the Pirelli INTERNETional Awards for Best Overall multimedia teaching site, and best site from higher education, the Best-in-Show Award from the Health Sciences Communications Association and a Gold Medal, Silver Medal and Award of Excellence in the international INVISION Multimedia Awards.

Pat has authored and illustrated eight books, and over professional papers, magazine articles, and book chapters. He has been a consultant and invited speaker on web design and web communications issues to many universities, government agencies, corporations, and non-profits groups, and regularly does talks, workshops, and professional papers on communications management, biocommunications, academic computing, medical illustration, biomedical visualization, and web strategy and production management.

In Yale University Press published his latest book, A Field Guide to Long Island Sound, a comprehensive guide to the environmental history, natural environments, plants, and animals of the Sound.

In Yale University Press published A Field Guide to the Southeast Coast & Gulf of Mexico, co-authored with Noble S. Proctor. In the Guide won the National Outdoor Book Award for field guidebooks. Patrick J. Lynch is a New York City Police Department officer, and the former president of its union, the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, which he has served for six consecutive terms in office. He retired as union president at the end of June

Personal life

Lynch was born in Bayside, Queens to an Irish Catholic family. He is the youngest of seven children. His father was a subway motorman for 30 years. He went to Monsignor Scanlan High School in the Bronx.

Lynch is married to Kathleen Casey, and has two sons, Patrick and Kevin, both of whom are New York City police officers.

Career

Lynch worked for a short time as a New York City Subway conductor, but on January 4, , he became a police officer with the New York City Police Department. He has been described as "New York City's Blue Bulldog" for being head of one of the largest police unions in the world, having served in this role since and winning reelection to a fifth term in

He has written four editions of the Web Style Guide for Yale University Press with his co-author Sarah Horton. Web Style Guide has been published in eleven languages, and was named one of Amazon's top 10 web books in In a New York Times review, J. D.
