The Main Three
"Yes, it is an answer. Maybe it's the best answer of all. If more people could admit they really don't know, maybe there never would have been a Heartland War."
One of the three main characters, Connor was signed by his parents to be unwound because of his trouble-making nature. He plans to runaway with his friend and crush Ariana, but she backs out at the last second. Connor gets caught, but manages to escape and meets Risa while rescuing Lev.
- Boy Meets Girl: Connor meets Risa.
- Deadpan Snarker
- Eye Scream: Loses his eye - and his arm - during the Clapper incident at the Chop Shop.
- Famed in Story: He builds up a reputation over time as the Akron AWOL.
- Foil: First Roland and later Starkey. Both see him as The Rival and share his natural leadership ability, but are more calculated and manipulative in their relationships with others and seek to use their power for their own glory and goals.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Connor gets worried when he notices Roland repetitively flirts with Risa and helps her out a lot (giving her his food, offering her his blanket) and even questions her about it, the first thing he says being, "You're not actually falling for him, are you?" We all know he's jealous, though.
- Hot-Blooded: His fiery attitude is why the Lassiters signed the order to have Connor unwound. Over time, though, Connor learns to control his temper and it cools down into Tranquil Fury.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Impulsive and quick-tempered, but ultimately cares about his best friends.
- Love Triangle: A mild, implied one between Connor, Risa, and Ariana. Connor, Risa, and Roland could possibly count too.
- Meaningful Name: Not his real one, but his Arápache alias translates to "stolen shark."
- Scars Are Forever: Lost an eye, received scars on his face, and lost an arm from the Clapper incident at the C
Unwind (novel)
2007 novel by Neal Shusterman
Unwind is a dystopian novel by Neal Shusterman. It takes place in the United States in the near future. After the Second Civil War ("The Heartland War") was fought over abortion, a compromise was reached, allowing parents to sign an order for their children between the ages of 13 and 18 to be "unwound" — taken to "harvest camps" and dissected into their body parts for later use. The reasoning is that since 99.44% of the body is used, unwinds do not technically die because their individual body parts live on.
Unwind was met with positive reception upon release, with praise focusing on the novel's immersive environment and sociological implications. A film adaptation of Unwind was in production, but Shusterman announced in January 2020 that a television series would be developed instead. A second novel titled UnWholly was released in August 2012, a third titled UnSouled in December 2013, and a fourth titled UnDivided in October 2014. A novella, UnStrung, was also published. UnBound is the most recent addition to the Unwind series and was written by Shusterman, Michelle Knowlden, Jarrod Shusterman, Terry Black, and Brendan Shusterman. It was published December 15, 2015, by Simon & Schuster and is a collection of novellas that explore the secrets and lost stories of the Unwind world.
Summary
Synopsis
In a near-future dystopian United States, the conflict between the pro-choice and pro-life movements escalated into a second civil war. In response, the government fought against both sides to stop the war from escalating and closed down schools and other services for children in order to do so. Children, teenagers, and young adults began protesting and rioting against the actions and nearly toppled the government in an event known as the Teen Uprising. At the same time, technology in organ transplants advanced into a process known as "unwinding"; organs and bod
