Early Life of Eiichiro Oda

Oda began his journey at the age of four when he resolved to become a manga artist to avoid getting a "real job". As a child, Oda read many different manga, “The Monster Kid” being the first he recalls.

According to Manish Prabhakar Singh (Research Scholar); The word "manga" is formed from two kanji characters, literally translating to "restrained images." Katsushika Hokusai, a renowned ukiyo-e artist, is credited with being the first to use the term "manga" with his publication "Hokusai Manga."

Jump started serializing Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball when Oda was in fifth grade. Oda was captivated from the first chapter onward and would be influenced by Toriyama's narrative style and artwork for years to come.

Although Oda’s career didn’t begin till the year 1992 when he was just a 17-year-old in high school. During this period, Oda took an interest in Shueisha's prestigious Tezuka Awards.

Promising Beginnings with Wanted!

Eiichiro Oda was born on January 1, 1975, in Kumamoto, Japan. He discovered manga very early, thanks to his father introducing him to The Monster Kid (Kaibutsu-kun) and Vicky the Viking, which likely sparked his passion for pirates. But it was discovering Akira Toriyama’s universe through the manga Dragon Ball that led young Eiichiro to find his calling: he wanted to create manga.

At just 17 years old, Oda received the 44th Tezuka Award for Wanted!, a short story set during the American West era featuring Gill Bastar, a legendary cowboy with a bounty on his head. Even though it’s a western, you can already see early hints of the famous wanted posters from One Piece.

His Years at Weekly Shonen Jump

In 1994, Eiichiro decided to leave his architecture studies and joined the Weekly Shōnen Jump team. He became an assistant to several manga artists such as Shinobu Kaitani and Nobuhiro Watsuki. This period was key in his career, as he learned alongside top professionals. He also published two new titles: Monsters in the Autumn Special 1994 and Romance Dawn in the Summer Special 1996.

This last work focuses on the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who dreams of becoming the Pirate King. After eating a Devil Fruit, his body becomes elastic, and he sets out on a quest to find treasure. One year later, in 1997, Oda published the second part of Romance Dawn under the name One Piece.

Early life

Eiichiro Oda was born on January 1, 1975, in Kumamoto, Japan. At the age of four he resolved to become a manga artist in order to avoid having to get a "real job". His biggest influence was Akira Toriyama and his series Dragon Ball. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking.

Career

At the age of 17, Oda submitted his work Wanted! and won several awards, including second place in the coveted Tezuka Award. That got him into a job at the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, where he originally worked as assistant manga artist/assistant to Shinobu Kaitani's series Suizan Police Gang before moving to Masaya Tokuhiro on Jungle King Tar-chan and Mizu no Tomodachi Kappaman, which gave him an unexpected influence on his artistic style. At the age of 19, he began working as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki on Rurouni Kenshin, before winning the Hop Step Award for new manga artists. Watsuki credits Oda for helping create the character Honjō Kamatari who appears in Rurouni Kenshin.

During this time, Oda drew two pirate-themed one-shot stories called "Romance Dawn", which were published in Akamaru Jump and Weekly Shōnen Jump respectively in late 1996. "Romance Dawn" featured Monkey D.

Eiichiro Oda (尾田 栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō, born January 1, 1975) is a Japanesemanga artist. He is best known for his artwork in One Piece.

Since November 7, 2004, Eiichiro Oda has been married to Chiaki Inaba (稲葉ちあき, Inaba Chiaki), a former model, actress and tarento. Oda met her in late 2003 during Jump Festa festival 2004 where Chiaki Inaba played Nami during "ONE PIECE Spectacle Stage", a official One Piece stage show. Oda and Inaba have had two daughters; the eldest was born in 2006 and the youngest in 2009.

Eiichiro Oda owns a manor alongside his workplace in Jiyugaoka (自由が丘, Jiyūgaoka), a wealthy neighborhood located in southern Meguro, in Tokyo Metropolitan area.  Oda adquised this home shortly after his marriage. His wife and daughters lives here.
