Patrick Charles Eugene Boone (born June 1, ) is an American singer, songwriter, actor, author, television personality, radio host and philanthropist. During his recording career, he sold nearly 50 million records and had 38 Top 40 hits; he also appeared in various Hollywood films.
According to Billboard, Boone was the only singer that could compete in popularity with Elvis Presley during the s.Billboard has ranked Pat as one of the biggest charting artists in the period – Until the s, Boone held the record for spending consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts with one or more songs each week.
During the s and the s Boone was one of the most popular entertainers in the United States, becoming a teen idol as a valid alternative to the perceived hedonism of rock and roll, due to his activities as singer, writer, actor and religious motivational speaker. In , at the age of 23, Boone began hosting a half-hour ABC variety television series, The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom, which aired for episodes (–). Many musical performers including Cliff Richard, Nat King Cole, Edie Adams, Andy Williams, Pearl Bailey, and Johnny Mathis made appearances on the show. His cover versions of rhythm and blues hits had a noticeable effect on the development of the broad popularity of rock and roll. Elvis Presley was the opening act for a Pat Boone show in Brooklyn, Ohio. The two later became close friends.
As an author, Boone had a number-one bestseller in the s ('Twixt Twelve and Twenty, Prentice-Hall). In the s, he focused on gospel music. Later, he became a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Today, he continues to perform and speak as a motivational speaker, a television personality, and a conservative political commentator.
Early life
Boone was born on June 1, , in Ja Charles Eugene Patrick Boone was born June 1, in Jacksonville, Florida; a descendant of American frontier hero Daniel Boone, he attended high school in Nashville, TN - Music City USA. "Pat" sang in church with his brother Nick and family, and originally was drawn to Pop music, influence by Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Nat Cole and others. From age 12 on, Boone sang all over Nashville at school affairs, Kiwanis meetings, Junior Chamber of Commerce events, Ladies Club luncheons, and on local TV and radio. During his junior and senior years in high school he hosted the Youth on Parade teen talent show on Saturday mornings on WSIX and was voted student body president. He developed a sudden interest in Country music when Shirley Foley, daughter of famed singer Red Foley transferred to David Lipscomb High School during his junior year. They became "an item" immediately, and Pat wrote his first Country song "Until You Tell Me So" and sang for Eddy Arnold in a meeting arranged by Shirley, accompanied by himself on a ukulele his mom had taught him to play (a few chords and a strum). Patrick Charles Eugene Boone ‘Pat Boone’ was born on 1 June in Jacksonville, Florida. He is an American singer, composer, actor, writer, television personality, motivational speaker, and spokesman.
The Boone family moved to Nashville when Pat was a child. Pat started singing at Nashville's Centennial Park and by , he had married Shirley Lee Foley () daughter of country music stars Red Foley and Judy Martin. Soon after record he started to raise the interest of record labels and he was signed by Republic Records in Dot Records the following year. Two years later Pat had become a celebrity and was starring in Hollywood films for 20th Century Fox.
In he started his own variety television show at ABC, The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom, which run for four years and he also made numerous appearances in other television shows over the years. Eventually he established his own film production company, Cooga Mooga Productions.
Although his early career focused on covering R&B and rock and roll music for the white American audience, by the s, he had moved to gospel and country music. During the s and s, he wrote a series of self-help books for young people, some of which were best sellers.
His career as a singer had started to wane in the s, although he continued recording and in the early s, he founded the record label Lamb & Lion Records. Pat continued to be involved in music, religion and politics through the early part of the s.
