“Sarah Graham’s work is uniquely beautiful. Her twisting , flowing , sensuous flower forms , executed with a restrained elegance yet a contemporary brio and layered with ravishing colour, have an echo of Isnik art. Some have an even more distant orient form which influences her pale delicate drawing, while others executed in bold chiaroscuro, recall Japanese ink drawings.
Here is an artist who knows her metier intimately and faultlessly, and who has studied her subject with diligence and devotion. Sarah’s [work] are a delight to the eye, mind and heart.’

  • "Your art, the joy of the subjects you pick. The colours. The silliness, the whimsy, the kindness. The child like wonder that you so effortlessly bring to life with your incredible gifts are the truth, are you. They always were and always will be."

    — Robbie Williams

My work is a vivid exploration of still life, using subjects that allow me to satisfy my obsession with colour; and within them somehow communicate that elusive sense of sheer joy. The process is very visceral.  Imagery is often borrowed from childhood; sweet things, toys, stuff that might evoke a sense of wonderment, and ultimately nostalgia.

“The plant kingdom is a form of constant mystery and means of self-projection for me, a search for the spiritual meaning in Nature. Exploring on foot, I gravitate to strong, architectural forms, often imbued with a sense of metamorphic meaning, anything that Nature throws up or has left along her way.

Focusing in or enlarging these finds permits me to paraphrase them into ‘abstract’ motifs. By distilling these basic forms, I hope to capture the esoteric and elemental force within, so much so that a plant returns to the protean act of creation and it’s essence and design are re-invoked.

Working in pure charcoal or graphite emphasizes this concentration on form and line, whilst more descriptive mediums of colour and paint lure me away from this vision. Executing the drawings within the studio, away from the original source, allows me to bestow it’s parts with an individual figurative detachment and suggestiveness.

This intensive scrutiny, often on a very large scale, of orchids, irises, seed-pods, bones and so on, reveals a universal language of form; both infinite and inspiring.’’
