    Early career

Sudhakarrao Rajusing Naik was born in Gahuli village in the Yavatmal region of Maharashtra in a Banjara tribal family on 21 August 1934. He was the nephew of former Maharashtra chief minister Vasantrao Naik.

Naik completed his education from Vidarbha Mahavidyalaya in Amravati, Maharashtra. In 1962, he started his political career as chairman of the Panchayat Samiti in Pusad.

In 1976, he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council on a Congress ticket. Two years later, he became an MLA and served the Pusad constituency for the next 17 years.

In that period, he also served in several ministries in the Maharashtra cabinet, starting with the housing, animal husbandry and fisheries departments in 1978. He served as minister for industries, revenue and social welfare in 1985-86, the minister for social welfare, energy and legislative affairs between 1988 and 1990, and the minister for revenue and parliamentary affairs in 1990-91.

He also edited two Marathi weeklies, Gram Swarajya and Sonali.

    Bombay riots

Sharad Pawar, then a Congress leader, was chief minister of Maharashtra until June 1991, but then became defence minister in Narasimha Rao’s central government. The trusted Naik became his successor.

Naik served as the Maharashtra CM between 25 June 1991 and 22 February 1993. However, during his tenure, India’s commercial capital was shaken by the 1992-93 riots.

Over 900 people died due to violence which was spread over two long phases — a week in December 1992 and 10 days in January 1993.

In 1998, the Justice B.N. Srikrishna report said it was Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray who directed the violence against Muslims. The report added that Naik’s government provided “effete political leadership” as it failed to stop Shiv Sena-led mobs from rampag

Only 2 CMs completed 5-year term since state formation, both from Vidarbha

Nagpur: In the tapestry of Maharashtra's political history, Vidarbha — often seen as a peripheral region — has quietly scripted an extraordinary feat. Since Maharashtra's formation in 1960, only 2 of 20 CMs sworn in so far — Vasantrao Naik and Devendra Fadnavis— successfully completed a full five-year term as chief minister. Both Naik and Fadnavis are from Vidarbha.
Yashwantrao Chavan, the first chief minister of Maharashtra, was chief minister of erstwhile Bombay State and continued to serve as the CM of Maharashtra after the state's formation on May 1, 1960, as per data collated from Govt of Maharashtra website. Naik, originally from Pusad in Yavatmal district, served as chief minister three times. He became the third CM of the state, subsequently taking over reins in December 1963, following the death of Marotrao Kannamwar — the only CM to die in harness.
Naik served as the chief minister for over 11 years from 1963 to 1975 and remains the longest-serving CM in Maharashtra's history. He hails from the royal Naik family, which has maintained a stronghold over the Pusad seat for almost 72 years — since the Bombay legislative assembly — and produced two CMs, making them one of the most influential chacha-bhatija (uncle-nephew) duos in the state's political arena.
Continuing the Vidarbha legacy, BJP heavyweight Devendra Fadnavis, who took office as the 21st chief minister of Maharashtra, is only the second person in the state's 64-year history to complete a full five-year term, serving from 2014 to 2019. Currently serving his third term as CM, Fadnavis is poised to make history as the first leader in Maharashtra to complete two full consecutive terms, if he completes his current tenure.
Surprisingly, the seven-time MLA also holds the record for the shortest-serving chief minister in Maharashtra's history, with a govt that lasted just 4 days. After comple
