    So, let me just start off by thanking you for not only for joining me here, but p90x changed my life. Do you hear people say that all the time?

    Tony Horton
    You know, oddly enough, yes. I’m still amazed by that. And I was in Seattle at a wedding, my cousin got married and, you know, you’re just walking through, you know, wherever and p90x. You know, I mean, it’s, it’s crazy. And then people want to have I mean, the thing is old, it was 2004 something and it’s still going strong and people are still doing it for the umpteenth time. And, and, you know, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’s just common sense exercises and, and a plan. You know, you find your purpose, I’ll hand you the plan, and you can get busy and you’ll you’ll do all right with that program. I mean, I’ve learned a lot since and done some other things since but, but you know, that probably been about eight moves I take out of p90x, but overall, it was all pretty good. Oh, what

    take out? Dive Bomber push ups probably wouldn’t do that one. Yeah, it can be really problematic on people’s shoulders. Not for everybody. Okay. What else? Yeah, a couple of moves in martial arts. A little twisty. Little tough on on the glue on sciatic area? Yeah, for the most part, you know, I mean, if you’re modifying as we asked you to do, and we do that, I mean, there are people that were 120 pounds overweight and, and lost it all doing p90x, just doing their thing their way, you know, sort of in, you know, interpreting it to accommodate their skill level. And over time, you know, I mean, a lot of people became 120 x and one year x, it was different for different folks, you know, some but anybody, anybody who got past the second month started seeing something for sure.

    Our guest is Tony Horton. He is the creator of the famous fitness series P90X and an array of follow-up workout programs. He’s a professional speaker and author of several books including Bring It!Crush It! and The Big Picture. Welcome, Tony.

    Peter, I’m supposed to be funny. Is that the whole deal?

    I’ve had some funny people who were notably unfunny on the show so don’t feel pressured.

    I’m not going to force anything. If it springs upon me, if I feel there’s a moment of humor then I will bring some levity.

    If you weren’t working as a trainer, entrepreneur, author or speaker, what would you be doing with your life?

    I’d be living in a box down by the lake for sure, feeding my fourteen cats and hoping to survive from moment to moment. I wanted to be an actor and a comic when I first came out here to LA. I dabbled in that. I was in a couple of little movies and I was in some commercials. I was with The Second City LA for about a year and I did a fantastic Colombo. I love making people laugh because I was an insecure kid with a speech impediment. I was last picked in every team and I was trying to fight through all these insecurities I had as a kid. Humor was the way to get out of trouble. It was also a way to appeal to women because I was looking for women as well when I first came out here. The fitness stuff came later, that came out of pure luck. That was happenstance. I wasn’t meant to be a fitness trainer.

    I recently interviewed Tony Horton on my podcast, Thirty Minute Mentors. Here is a transcript of our interview:

    Adam: Our guest today is a pioneer in the world of home fitness and one of America's leading fitness experts. Tony Horton is the creator of the mother of all workouts, and perhaps the single most financially successful workout of all time, P90X, and the creator of the new workout program, PowerNation. Tony, thank you for joining us.

    Tony: Adam, my pleasure.

    Adam: Literally millions of people, myself included, have done P90X and millions more recognize you from the famous P90X infomercials. And you're seen by so many as the face and the voice of extreme fitness. But growing up, you were, in your own words, a 98 pound weakling with, interestingly enough, a speech impediment. So before you started transforming other people's bodies, how did you transform yourself?

    Tony: Well, you're absolutely right. Yeah, I mean, I don’t know if I was 98 I probably was a buck 35 or something like that. But yeah, pretty scrawny kid. Um, you know, I mean, it started toward the end of high school where I began to get my confidence up and I was dealing with my speech impediment to the point where it wasn't as noticeable as it was when I was a kid. And so that actually helped. And then and then I went off to college, took a weightlifting class, it really changed everything, you know? Just a simple class on hypertrophy and resistance and bodyweight training and stuff like that. And it's the first time I'd ever actually really trained, you know? I mean, I played intramural sports and basketball, and baseball and softball, and you know, sandlot football and whatever. And I wasn't very good at any of those things. I was a skier, but I wasn't very good. I was a golfer, but I was just okay. I love tennis but I didn't make the team. I tried out for the tennis team in high school but didn't make it.

    Zach: All of those would've should've could've or probably the same story you've been telling yourself for years and they all in the same. Would you actually doing nothing or at best, not enough to get to where you want to go. ,

    I can't. I mean, it's all hard. All, I'm all. I got a job. I got kids and I got stressed. I have traffic and I have bills in the moon. I have a, I have a pandemic. And now you want me to work out five to seven days a week and eat vegetables out of you out of your mind will then stay miserable. My friend,

    It is amazing how, when properly motivated, we can suddenly find the will and a way to take action on the things we say we want to do this episode is a shining example of that. Zach, for months, you have told me to go to the gym. I've had a hundred reasons not to get. I tried going, I hated it and I quit.

    But when I knew that we were going to be talking to the world, famous creator of P90X, I had a reason to try it again. So now, well, over a month later, I haven't missed a workout. I feel great. And I'm creating my own motivation to keep going. And that is spilling over to other areas of my life.
