Dhirubhai was born in the small village of Chorwad, in the western Indian province of Gujarat. He is from the same region and tribe as Mahatma Gandhi. His father was Hirachand Govardhandas Ambani. He was a teacher in the village and did not earn much money. He lived a simple life with Dhirubhais mother, Jamanaben.
Dhirubhai had two sisters and two brothers: Trilochanaben, Jasuben, Natubhai and Ramnikbhai. It is customary in the region where he was born to add ben to female names, which means sister.
