Henry IV (c. April 1367 – 20 March 1413), also known as Henry Bolingbroke, was King of England from 1399 to 1413. Henry was the son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster (a son of King Edward III), and Blanche of Lancaster.

Henry was involved in the 1388 revolt of Lords Appellant against Richard II, his first cousin, but he was not punished. However, he was exiled from court in 1398. After Henry's father died in 1399, Richard blocked Henry's inheritance of his father's lands. That year, Henry rallied a group of supporters, overthrew and imprisoned Richard II, and usurped the throne; these actions later contributed to dynastic disputes in the Wars of the Roses (1455–1487).

Henry was the first English ruler whose mother tongue was English (rather than French) since the Norman Conquest, over 300 years earlier. As king, he faced a number of rebellions, most seriously those of Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welshman to claim the title of Prince of Wales, and the English knight Henry Percy (Hotspur), who was killed in the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. Henry IV had six children from his first marriage to Mary de Bohun, while his second marriage to Joan of Navarre produced no surviving children. Henry and Mary's eldest son, Henry of Monmouth, assumed the reins of government in 1410 as the king's health worsened. Henry IV died in 1413, and his son succeeded him as Henry V.

Henry IV ( 3 April 1367 – 20 March 1413) was the King of England and France and Lord of Ireland from 1399 to 1413. He was born at Bolingbroke Castle in Lincolnshire, hence the other name by which he was known, "Henry (of) Bolingbroke". His father, John of Gaunt, was the third and oldest surviving son of King Edward III of England, and enjoyed a position of considerable influence during much of the reign of Richard II. Henry's mother was Blanche, heiress to the considerable Lancaster estates.

His half-sister Catalina Plantagenet by his father's second wife, Constanza of Castile ruled as co-consort of Castile. He also had four half-siblings by Katherine Swynford, his father's longtime mistress and eventual third wife. His relationship with the Beauforts and their mother was equivocal. He expressed resentment that his former governess had taken his mother’s place, as well as the favour shown to them by their father. Upon his accession, he revoked his half-bro

He is commonly known as Henry Bolingbroke due to his association with the castle in which he was born. Henry was the only son of John of Gaunt and Blanche of Lancaster. Both of his parents were descended from King Henry III and were distant cousins. Henry's father was usually abroard fighting on military services so when Blanche died from the Black Death when Henry his upbringing was left to other Lancastrian supporters. After the death of Blanche, Henry's father married Constance, the eldest daughter of King Pedro of Castile who he had helped regain his throne. At this early age Henry was not the heir to the English throne. This position was taken by his uncle the Black Prince, the eldest son of King Edward III. But the Black Prince died and his son Richard then became heir. Upon the death of the Black Prince, Gaunt returned to England to help run the country. The King Edward died Richard was too young to rule and so Gaunt acted as regent until the young king was old enough.

    Marriage

At the young age of fourteen years old Henry married Mary Bohun, the daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford. Henry and Mary's first son was born at Monmouth Castle in September 1387. His name was also Henry and he would become Henry V, King of England.

    Lords Appellant

In 1387 Henry joined the Lord Appellants who opposed King Richard II's court favourites and took part in the battle of Radcot Bridge where Robert de Vere, Richard's favourite was defeated. A year later Henry returned to the king's side possibly because his father, John of Gaunt, had returned from Spain. In 1390 Henry took part in an expedition to Lithuania where he joined the Teutonic Knights in a local conflict. He later took a Grand Tour of Europe on his way to Jerusalem, visiting the important European states and their leaders.

Henry IV (3 April 1367 – 20 March 1413) was a King of England. He was born at Bolingbroke Castle in Lincolnshire, which is why he was often called "Henry Bolingbroke".

    Rise to power

    [change | change source]

His father, John of Gaunt, was the third son of King Edward III, and had a lot of power in the reign of King Richard II.

Henry and Thomas de Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk argued in 1398. King Richard ordered Henry to live outside England for ten years (with the approval of Henry's father, John of Gaunt) but Thomas de Mowbray was exiled from England for life.

The next year John of Gaunt died, and Richard would not allow Henry to inherit Gaunt's land. Instead, Henry had to ask for the lands from Richard.

Henry met with the exiled Thomas Arundel, former Archbishop of Canterbury. Henry and Arundel returned to England while Richard was on a military campaign in Ireland.

With Arundel as his advisor, Henry Bolingbroke began a military campaign, took land from those who opposed him and ordering his soldiers to destroy much of Cheshire.

Henry gained enough power and support to have himself declared King Henry IV. He sent King Richard to priso
