    From how the minority communities of Pakistan celebrate to an American photographer’s quest to explore life in a big city captured after walking 20km/day for five long years, from the trials and tribulations faced by Bangladeshi migrants to Italy to the global menace of human trafficking, from the modern sea bathing culture in the town of Scheveningen in Netherlands to the hidden world of one of the world’s most endearing creatures – pandas, powerful human narratives from nearly 30 countries will form part of Kolkata’s largest ever photography festival that kicks off on February 28.

    Countries from where works have already come in for KIPF 2019 include Italy Columbia Mozambique Nepal Singapore Iran Pakistan Canada Belgium South Africa Sweden France China USA Australia Thailand Nigeria Germany Japan Ethiopia Tunisia Bangladesh Mexico Poland Vietnam Netherland and Israel.

    Raj Sarkar, KIPF’s executive body member said “Best photographers always look for the best platforms to showcase their work.  On the other hand, best festivals always desire to host the best photographers and portray their work.  Kolkata has always been a second home for most of the world’s greatest photographers. They often come here and explore this city in a very unique way. They, therefore, have a personal bond with Kolkata. That’s why they are all part of KIPF”.

    The much acclaimed Greek philosopher, Democritus once said, “Kinship does not make friends, but common interests.” One would strongly agree with these wise words as common interests are what bring us all together; this is evident from a rise in social media groups pertaining to specific interests be these photography, art or any other. Aaj Ka Random is one such group on Facebook that brings under its umbrella those people who have a flair for photography and as the title suggests, it’s rather more about an instinct to capture random things that possess an extraordinary characteristic amidst ordinary surroundings.

    And the group is quite real, this is something that most would have realised after attending the session by Mobeen Ansari that the admin arranged at Allaince Francaise. What I really like about this group is that unlike quite some other groups (related to various other topics), people are not constantly trying to find an opportunity to start bashing someone or pulling each other’s legs, this is something strongly emphasised upon in the rules as well. Also, not being allowed to post selfies or food and drink pictures is such an ultimate blessing because there is more to life than just food and drinks, and perhaps the much talked about topic, apparel brands too. There are books, nature and countless other things to talk about that we often tend to ignore and yet find solace in the most mediocre things (alright food is an exception). 

    Mobeen was right on time despite those evening chaotic traffic jams and our road-less Karachi, this simply shows how serious and professional he was on his part.     In 2012, Pakistani photographer Mobeen Ansari set out in search of a woman named Bibi Kai. A member of the Kalash tribe, which is a minority in Pakistan, the 74-year-old is famous for being one of the most photographed women in her community.

    To find her, Ansari had to travel to a remote village in Rumbur Valley, situated on the northwest bank of the Chitral river in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which is connected to the rest of the country by a single road. And all he had with him was a printout of an older picture of Bibi Kai’s.

    “On reaching [the village], I showed the printout to a local who then took me to see her,” said Ansari.

    “I finally met Bibi Kai and was intimidated by her piercing green eyes.
