    Clarke Homestead

This beautiful, abandoned home was built in 1896 and featured four bedrooms on the upper floor. The main floor had a large kitchen, pantry, parlour and two veranda entrances on the east and west side of the house. The east side had a large stepping stone which is still visible at the home.

In 1896/98 the house was built by Andreas Wetter. He sold the property to the Soldier Settlement Board.

The Soldier Settlement Board was established in Canada in 1917 to assist returned servicemen in setting up farms. The Board would give assistance to any man who had served abroad with the Canadian Expeditionary Force

Harry Clarke, born in 1877, first came to Canada in 1891 when he was 14. He worked on a farm for 6 years and then returned to England then immigrated back to Canada in 1902 by himself.

At the age of 38 he enlisted in the Canadian Expedition Force in 1916. He served as a batman and returned in 1918. He was discharged in 1919 and was able to purchase the property with the help of the Soldier Settlement Board around 1920.

A few years later, Harry met Julia Shave and the married. They had 3 children, two girls and a handicapped son. Harry and Julia had an unhappy marriage and the divorced in 1926.

Harry remarried a few years later when he met Anna Strudl who had immigrated to Canada from Austria in 1925. Anna worked at the Waldorf Hotel in Leduc, owned by Harry’s brother-in-law Fred Aicher.

Normalcy returned to the family, and they survived through the great depression.

The daughters Nellie and Margaret quit school at 15 and remained

It is June 12 and sadly I just read that Elizabeth had passed away this February. I did not know she was ill…..I do not live in Vegreville anymore and had not heard. I would have loved to attend her celebration of life. I was Elizabeth’s junior high teacher. I remember her as a thoughtful, respectful student, a gentle heart. Over the years I did run into her and she was always so full of life and respectful of the relationship we had……years ago. She made me feel like a special teacher. I am sure that is the kind of young woman she was, thoughtful, loving and caring. My condolences and prayers Mrs . Hewko. You raised a beautiful daughter. May she rest in peace.

Every morning when I would go to the cashier's cage to give the deposits to Liz, my heart felt lighter when I saw her smile, and going to work didn't feel like work anymore. She would share with me stories of her life, and a few times she would make my jaw drop, by how crazy some situations got. The last time I talked to Liz I told her, this will be another crazy story for you to tell. Liz's warmth and caring heart will never fade, and her life's stories will be remembered by many broken heart's. Her story ended way too soon, and she will forever be missed. My deepest condolences, to Mrs. Hewko, and family. Christine Presizniuk
