The Stateside successors of New Kids On The Block, the Backstreet Boys sold over 73 million records worldwide after their arrival on the pop scene in 1997, making them one of the most successful boy bands of all time.

Their career

Bandmembers AJ Mclean, Howie Dorogough and Nick Carter had already managed to land minor film and advertising roles when, in 1993, they bumped into each other during auditions held after a well-known talent spotter had placed a newspaper advert seeking members for a new band. 

The three passed with flying colours and were later joined by Kentucky cousins Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell. After setting the local Florida teen scene alight playing small gigs at high school dances and graduation nights, the boys released their eponymously titled debut album in 1996. 

It was an immediate success in Germany where the market was already clued up to boy bands such as Take That and Boyzone, but made no impact in the US. "We were Americans, we were a fresh new sound for Europe," says Brian, explaining their warm reception there. 

"We had more of an edge, and unlike a lot of those other boy groups, we were more than just a bunch of pretty guys. We could sing". In the ensuing years, the Backstreet Boys caused havoc among European teens, frequently eliciting scenes of Beatlemania proportions. 

Then, in 1997, following the band's scoop of an MTV Europe Award, folks back home started to pay attention. Despite being idolised by thousands of female fans on both sides of the Atlantic, however, the boys say love didn't come easy.

Kevin married his long-term girlfriend, dancer Kristin Willits, in June 2000, followed three months later by his younger cousin Brian who walked down a candlelit aisle with actress Leighanne Wallace.

Backstreet Boys (often abbreviated as BSB) are an American vocal group consisting of Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, and cousins Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson. The band formed in 1993 in Orlando, Florida.

The group rose to fame with their debut album, Backstreet Boys (1996). In the following year, they released their second album Backstreet's Back (1997), along with their self-titled U.S. album, Backstreet Boys (1997), which continued the group's success worldwide. They rose to superstardom with their third studio album Millennium (1999), anchored by the worldwide hit "I Want It That Way," and its follow-up album, Black & Blue (2000). They also released a greatest hits album, The Hits – Chapter One (2001). After a two-year hiatus, they regrouped and released a comeback album, Never Gone (2005). After the conclusion of the Never Gone Tour in 2006, Richardson left the group to pursue other interests. The group then released two albums as a quartet: Unbreakable (2007) and This Is Us (2009).

Richardson permanently rejoined the group in 2012. In the following year, they celebrated their 20th anniversary and released their first independent album, In a World Like This. Their follow-up album DNA (2019) debuted at number one, nineteen years after they last topped the chart in 2000. They also became the first boy band to top the U.S. album charts in three decades. In 2022, they released their first Christmas album, A Very Backstreet Christmas. They celebrated their 30th anniversary on April 20, 2023.

History

Backstreet Boys originated in Orlando, Florida and was formed on April 20, 1993 by Lou Pearlman with the help of a producer, Lil’ Shy. The early line-up of the group were Howie Dorough (19), AJ McLean (15), Nick Carter (13), Sam Licata and Charles Edwards. However Licata and Edwards left in early 1993 for personal reasons. In April 1993, Kevin Richardson along with his cousin Brian Littrell completed the group.

After series of tours and the failure of possible Mercury Records, the Backstreet Boys was finally spotlighted in Cleveland, Ohio by Jive Records in February 1994. They recorded their very first single, “We’ve Got it Goin’, written by Denniz PoP and included in Backstreet Boys’ first self-titled album that was released in summer of 1996.

• Howie Dorough was born in Orlando, Florida on August 22, 1973. He started his entertainment career at a tender age of six when he participated in an Orlando Production, The Wizard of Oz. As he grew old, he became more active in their school choir and theater. Howie has also performed in various Nickelodeon productions and other movies.
• AJ McLean was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on January 9, 1978. Like Howie, he was also a product of Nickelodeon and Disney Productions. AJ joined the group after a series of auditions with original co-members, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter.
