Former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Joginder Singh passed away earlier today after a prolonged illness. His cremation will happen tomorrow at 1 pm at the Lodhi Crematorium in New Delhi. Singh, who was the CBI director for between 1996-97 was an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. He has been serving as an Independent Non- Executive Director of Sunil Healthcare Ltd. since January, 2000 and also served as the Director of Pamwi Tissues Ltd.

Before joining the CBI, Singh’s profile included top posts such as Superintendent of Police in Bihar, DIG and IG Police in Karnataka, Director of Youth Services in Karnataka, Special Home Secretary to the Government of Karnataka, Director, Ministry of Commerce, Director General, Narcotics Control Bureau, Director General, Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force, Special Secretary in the Union Home Ministry and many others.

Singh, who was selected for the Indian Police Service at the age of 20, also authored various inspirational books including ‘Make a Way Where There is None’, ’50 Days to Top’, ‘Inside CBI’, ‘Police Ke Kahani Meri Zabani’, among various others. Singh was also known for his articles, features and columns, on the subjects of terrorism, corruption, good governance, that were carried in national dailies like The Pioneer, The Free Press Journal, Navbharat Times and others in different languages. He has also handled terrorism and security issues as IG CRP, both in Punjab and Kashmir for some five years. During this stint, he has served as a head of CBI both on ground level and for investigation.

Singh was been conferred the awards of Panth Rattan, Delhi Rattan and Punjabian DI Shan. His other awards included Millennium Sikh Gold Award and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sadbhavana Award.

    Singh, who joined Police Service at the age of 20, rose to take charge of CBI on July 31, 1996 when it was probing a
    large number of sensitive cases including Bofors, fodder scam, securities scam, the JMM MPs bribery scandal, Rs 133 crore urea scam, telecom deals by the then Union minister Sukh Ram, among others. Back in 2012, he faced allegations of financial irregularities in his own group housing society called Nav Sansad Vihar Cooperative Group Housing Society in Dwarka area of New Delhi. He was unceremoniously removed from the post of president. He was also rebuked by the apex court for hobnobbing with politicians involved in hawala cases.

    The ever outspoken officer who never hid his views on the functioning of CBI and corruption in the country, Singh had told The Hindu in an interview that many temptations were thrown at him when the agency was probing the fodder scam in which two former chief ministers of Bihar Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra, besides a host of politicians and bureaucrats were allegedly involved.

    Selected for IPS at the age of 20, Singh has authored numerous books including ‘Make a Way Where There is None’, ’50 Days to Top’, ‘Inside CBI’, ‘Police Ke Kahani Meri Zabani’, among others. He has also contributed articles, to various newspapers on the subjects of corruption, terrorism, and good governance. During his tenure as IG CRP, he has handled terrorism and security issues both in Kashmir and Punjab for around five years.

    Singh has also received awards such as Panth Rattan, Delhi Rattan and Punjabian Di Shan.

    Joginder Singh, who was selected for the Indian Police Service at the age of 20, served as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief between 1996 and 1997.

    Former CBI Director Joginder Singh died in New Delhi on Friday after a prolonged illness. He was 77.

    Singh, who was selected for the Indian Police Service at the age of 20, served as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief between 1996 and 1997.

    The cremation will be held on Saturday afternoon at the Lodhi Crematorium in New Delhi.

    Before joining the CBI, he served as superintendent of police in Bihar, deputy inspector general and inspector general in Karnataka, director of youth services in Karnataka, special home secretary to the government of Karnataka, director in ministry of commerce, director general in Narcotics Control Bureau, director general in Indo-Tibetan Border Police and special secretary in the home ministry among other postings.

    He also served as inspector general in the Central Reserve Police Force, and led a number of delegations to the UK, USA, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Iran, UAE, Hong Kong and Switzerland on behalf of the government.

    Singh also authored books like ‘Make a Way Where There is None’, ‘50 Days to Top’, ‘Inside CBI’, ‘Some Untold Tales’, ‘Without Fear and Favour’ and ‘Inside India’.

    Singh wrote articles, features and columns on terrorism, corruption, good governance etc. in national dailies in different languages.
